Synopsis
A business on the line. A friendship on the edge. A woman caught in the middle.
In a seaside California town, best friends Mac and Nick are on opposite sides of the law. Mac is a former drug dealer trying to clean up his act, while Nick is a high-profile detective trying to take down a Mexican drug lord named Carlos. Soon Nick's loyalties are put to the test when he begins an affair with restaurateur Jo Ann -- a love interest of Mac's -- unwittingly leading his friend into a police-orchestrated trap.

Yuppie Point Break, straight upwith a Raul Julia twist. Kinda feels like it could have been some noir thriller in 1952. Love the cast, especially RJ and J.T. Walsh, and that orangey haze swingset scene that gives me the vapors.Average to many but right the hell up my very specific shit house slop alley. Tequila Sunriseis the textbook definition of the phrase imagine if Tony Scott directed this, a dumb chucklehead joke that in this instance I’m using 100% unironically.
Nice Pat Riley hair, Kurt.

Relative to the pedigree involved here I would argue that this is the most shockingly unalluring film ever produced.

Review by Todd Gaines ★★★ 11
We don’t talk a lot aboutTequila Sunrise. In my opinion, it is one of the more forgotten ‘80s action dramas. I couldn’t tell you the last time I watched, and I didn’t remember any of the plot as I watched last night. Fear not, there’s enough here to talk about.
Mel Gibson drinks a lot of hard liquor. Kurt Russell looks exactly like former LA Lakers Coach, Pat Riley. If the rumors are true, Riley was considered for Kurt’s role. That’s Hollywood Hilarious. Michelle Pfeiffer makes a mean plate of pasta. This 3-way love connection felt a bit off. The bromance between Mel and Kurt is stronger than any of the other relationships in the film. The movie does feel…

Sexy saxophone and scintillating, sinful synths are the unintentional highlights of this steamy drama. Though boasting a strong cast, the hard to swallow plot is a weak concoction of inexplicable events, convoluted allegiances and dubious happenstance.

Review by Dave Edwards ★★ 5
With Tequila Sunrise, Towne continues with his classic Hollywood obsessions, this time doing his best Micheal Curtiz impression. I kept expecting the saxophone that’s heavily featured on the soundtrack would play “As Time Goes By” but no such luck. The main issue is Towne could be a fantastic screenwriter - at times, the best in the business - but his directing skills are, shall we say, lacking. The one thing that’s impossible to deny is Towne’s casting skills; he gets a ton of mileage out of the star wattage and impossibly charismatic performances of Russell, Gibson, and Pfeiffer. And I’m always a sucker for a J.T. Walsh performance. It’s just too bad Tequila Sunrise doesn’t seem interested in having a little more fun or giving it’s actors more to do…

Review by KYK ★★★½
it's mildly thrilling in plot, but that matters little when it's perpetually soaked in golden hour orange juice with steamy moments of wet and wildness (people shoot out of the water in a sex scene, michelle pfeiffer desperately wades into the ocean). plus it features two grown ass men having a serious convo on a swing set against a gorgeous sunset... there aren't enough movies like this imo.

Has that same old Hollywood charm where we watch impossibly compelling stars in dramatic situations that are familiar to us but apparently new to them. Artisnal cinematic candy.

I love the poster for Tequila Sunrise.
That title font?!? Chef’s kiss! Can’t you just imagine that showing up on the little film background when Siskel & Ebert were reviewing it and immediately thinking that any title with a font that stylized has to be good?
Then you got the boat explosion, Kurt Russel with his slicked back yuppie hair holding a gun and a sun outline holding in all that glorious yellow and burnt orange. How can this movie not be amazing???
This was the most boring, convoluted piece of shit I’ve seen in a hot minute. That boat explosion? Literally the only thing approaching action in the whole movie. If the movie wanted to be a drama it better well sell me a drama on that poster art. The poster literally should have just been Gibson, Russel and Pfeiffer engaged in a three way conversation in a restaurant booth. That is the perfect representation of this waste of time.

Review by Symon ★★½
It’s so impressive that Michelle Pfeiffer could keep the men straight in this. I could barely tell Mel Gibson and Kurt Russell apart. The scenes they shared together were a truly disorienting experience.
The whole thing is incredibly anticlimactic. Too much bro energy and nothing to back it up. Far too much stock is put into the charm of Gibson and Russell but neither does a thing for me.... Michelle Pfeiffer on the other hand makes my little gay heart sing.
Raul Julia’s monologue about “friendship” is a real highlight though!

Review by Fabian ★★ 2
An uninspired relic of the late 1980s, back when it was still enough for the major Hollywood studios to stick their most bankable stars into the same film and turn even the least promising screenplays into a financial success. Here, those names are Mel Gibson, Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell: not all their names still exude enthusiasm among casual movie-going audiences thirty-five years later, but watching Tequila Sunrise, it is not hard to see why they lured viewers into the cinema in troves at the heyday of their careers. It is all the more disappointing that the film itself is so boring and uninteresting.
While Tequila Sunrise boasts a visually dazzling backdrop (for which cinematographer Conrad L. Hall even got…

Full-tilt camera candy like Russell, Pfeiffer, and Gibson and somehow Raúl Juliá walks away with this film. Also flexing throughout: 80s morals.
